Measles Outbreaks a Danger to Children's Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report last week announcing that 131 cases of measles have been reported in this country through the month of July, while only 42 cases were reported all of last year. Health officials have linked these outbreaks directly to communities that have chosen not to vaccinate their children.

"This is the very reason Every Child By Two began," said Amy Pisani, executive director. "In the early 90's, children were dying because of measles and our cofounders, Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter and Former First Lady of Arkansas Betty Bumpers, knew they had to do something to stop it. If we do not act now, more children will die needlessly of this completely preventable disease. We all have to ensure that our children are protected against this horrible disease."

While the number of cases may not seem high, 15 children have already been hospitalized, and one in 1,000 people who contract measles can be expected to die. Every Child By Two is urging parents to get the facts about this disease and the MMR vaccine in order to save their children's lives.
